Steps to Make Kitchen Cabinet Doors On Your Own

1 Selecting the Right Material

If you want to make kitchen cabinet doors, then you can opt for the easiest design of slab doors. To make slab doors, you can select medium density fiberboard (MDF). This keeps them strong and paintable. Made with compressed wood fibres, MDF is a dense material that is less expensive than wood, but very strong and easy to work with. The smooth and even surface makes it a great choice if you plan on painting your cabinets with beautiful colors.

2 Take Accurate Measurements

With the help of an inch tape, measure the openings in the cabinet frame. Traditional slab doors can fit inside the cabinet frame or over it depending upon the design of your choice. If you are going for over fitting cabinet doors, add about 1⁄2 in (1.3 cm) onto all of your measurements to account for the overlay.

3 Saw the Pieces According to the Measurements

Cut out the doors of the required size and shape using a sharp wood-cutting saw. It is preferred that you use a circular saw and table saw if you have access to one. Since we are working with MDF, you should select a carbide-tipped blade that is designed for plywood sawing. Gradually trim down the board as per the measurements you made, then test fit the door in the frame. Keep on trimming and testing until the perfect fit has been achieved.

5 Smooth Out The Edges

Next you need to rout the door’s edges in order to smooth them out. Use a wood router to even out the chips and splinters left behind after sawing. Alternatively, you can also use a 100-grit sandpaper to smooth out the edges.

6 Apply Wood Polish and Paint

Once the doors are cut and ready, apply polish and paint the doors to protect it from termites, moisture and splashes and also to give your kitchen a beautiful appearance.

Your kitchen cabinet doors are made. Install them in place for a renewed and rejuvenating kitchen experience.
